Exploring the Bold Fusion of Sesame Oil and Scotch Whisky

sesame oil infused Scotch

At The Double Strainer, we’re all about finding unique ways to elevate classic cocktail ingredients, and today’s spotlight is on a powerhouse infusion: sesame oil infused Scotch whisky. This smooth, nutty infusion combines the rich, peaty notes of some Scotch with the deep, toasty aroma of sesame, creating a distinctive base perfect for crafting complex, unforgettable cocktails.

Why Sesame Oil Infused Scotch Whisky?

Whisky infusions have been a staple in cocktail bars around the world, but infusing Scotch whisky with sesame oil is something that takes this tradition to the next level. The combination balances the smoky, sometimes medicinal flavor profile of Scotch with the subtle nuttiness of sesame oil. The result? A rich, complex spirit that brings warmth, depth, and an unexpected twist to your favorite cocktails. Sesame oil infused Scotch whisky can add a distinct dimension to both classic cocktails and innovative drinks. Try it in a Rob Roy or an Old Fashioned, or get adventurous with a smoky, sesame-kissed twist on the Penicillin.

Choosing the Right Scotch Whisky

When making the sesame oil infused Scotch whisky, the type of Scotch you choose will impact the final flavor profile. Here are a few guidelines:

  1. For a Bolder Flavor: If you want an infusion with strong, smoky notes, go for an Islay Scotch. The robust peatiness of Islay malts like Laphroaig or Ardbeg can hold its own against the deep, toasty notes of sesame oil.

  2. For a Milder Infusion: Opt for a blended or Highland Scotch if you prefer a gentler, smoother finish. These tend to have lighter, honeyed notes that will balance nicely with the nutty warmth of sesame without overpowering it.

  3. Age and Quality: Since this infusion will mask some subtleties of the whisky, it’s not necessary to use a high-end, aged Scotch. A quality, entry-level bottle should work beautifully.

Choosing the Sesame Oil

Not all sesame oils are created equal. Here’s what to look for:

  1. Toasted vs. Untoasted: For this infusion, toasted sesame oil is the best choice. It’s rich, nutty, and has an intense aroma that will shine through, even in a small quantity.

  2. Pure Sesame Oil: Make sure the oil is 100% sesame with no added flavors or preservatives. Pure oils will give you the cleanest, richest infusion.

Tips for Perfecting Your Infusion

  • Start with Less Oil: Because sesame oil is so powerful, start with a small amount and adjust to taste. You can always add more if you want a stronger sesame note.

  • Experiment with Other Flavors: Try adding a small piece of vanilla bean, a cinnamon stick, or a few peppercorns to the infusion for extra depth.

  • Keep It Cold: Always use the freeze separation technique when infusing with oils to avoid cloudiness in the final product.
