Agua de horchata: from Mexico with love

Agua de horchata is a traditional Mexican beverage made primarily from rice, almonds, cinnamon, and sugar. The rice is soaked, blended, and strained to create a creamy, sweet drink with a refreshing flavor. Often served chilled, it’s a popular choice at parties, celebrations, and alongside meals, offering a delightful balance of sweetness and spice. Variations may include additional ingredients like vanilla or cocoa, making it a versatile and beloved treat. Here our twist:


Agua de horchata

Time needed: 7 hours


Tools:

Glass jar (1 liter)

Blender

Water heater

Spoon

Double strainer


Ingredients:

200g Rice

13oz (400ml) Hot water

5oz (150ml) Condensed milk

5oz (150ml) Whole milk

5oz (150ml) Filtered water

1.7oz (50ml) Acacia honey syrup

1brsp Vanilla extract

1 Cinnamon stick


Procedure:

1. Warm up, almost to the boiling point, the filtered water

2. Mix the rice, the cinnamon stick (broke it in little pieces) and the hot water in a jar and stir the mixture

3. Let it rest for 6 hours stirring it from time to time

4. Blend everything for 2 minutes

5. Fine strain the result

6. Pour, in the mixture obtained, the vanilla, whole and condensed milk, acacia honey syrup and blend until homogeneous (2 minutes at least)

7. Bottle the final result, label it and store in the fridge

8. Serve the mocktail in a highball glass, over ice cubes, with a mint sprig
